Access concerns over the new Wetherspoons bar and restaurant in Largs have been raised with the 'News'.

Resident Cathyloch McDonald believes wheelchair access is 'impossible to negotiate' because of the lack of ramp access, but the pub supergiant have responded by saying that the lift to the promenade was the only option.

On our Facebook page this week, Cathyloch McDonald wrote: "Whoever in planning or ticked the okay box for the disabled access to the new Wetherspoons has let down the disabled people of Largs.

"To access, there is a lift on the prom. This goes to an outdoor balcony full of tables and chairs and when people sit there, it will be impossible to negotiate a wheelchair.

"There are ramps at Costa, Co-op, Bean and Leaf so would it have been so hard to put one in? I feel we have been let down by whoever approved building with this oversight. It is probably legal, just not practical."

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We take on board Ms McDonald’s comments.

“However, it was not possible to install a ramp to the front entrance due to a number of factors

“There is a bus shelter outside our front door and the steps had to be 2m away from this we have had to move the bus stop just to get the entrance steps in The distance required for a ramp which would comply would not fit to the front of our premises

“The lift to the promenade was the only option. The disabled entrance is a single door immediately as you get off the lift and there will be no furniture in this area so they do not have to go through the external drinking area to gain access to our pub

“The door is fully glazed.”

The new Wetherspoons development is set to open on Tuesday June 28.
