Silver medal teenage star Abby Kane was given a hero's welcome as she returned to Largs to exultant cheers from school, and a surprise street party on Tuesday afternoon.

As Abby and her family travelled home from Glasgow Airport, flags and medal banners were proudly on display on the A78 railings opposite the Haylie Brae entrance, and Abby stopped at Largs Academy and Brisbane Primary to receive congratulations before returning home.

Shortly after 4pm, the skirl of the bagpipes greeted Abby's entrance at her street - Braeside Avenue - with all her neighbours cheering with flags and hugs in emotional scenes as the teen returned home to fantastic scenes.

An overjoyed Abby said: "It's so nice and I didn't expect any of this. The atmosphere was really good and I matched the Paralympic record in the heat and to get the silver medal was a terrific feeling."

Mum Karen said: "It's absolutely fantastic - to see all the effort that everybody has made in the street, at Brisbane Primary where she used to be, and Largs Academy. It's so nice.
I just have tears in my eyes. After she swam for the heats,  I relaxed a bit for the finals.
"We are delighted with the result and really really happy.
"There have been a lot of challenges and new experiences for her, a lot of things she hasn't been up against before, being away for this length of time and having to stay focussed for the main event, and she has done it and you can't ask for better.
"The whole of Largs has been so supportive and it's been so good and we really appreciate it.
Brother Fraser said:"It's unbelievable - Words can't describe how proud we all are. It's been fantastic to see her perform so well at such a young age and really enjoy the experience. We are so proud.
"The atmosphere was electric and he Brazilian supporters really supported everyone.
"It was nerve wracking but we were confident in her and her fitness. She got her endurance in the 400m, and then the sprint in the 50m so we were hopeful for the 100m back.
"She beat all our expectations - it was brilliant. "

A celebration cake was provided by Greggs, and a welcome home banner was set up with food and drinks as the celebrations continue long into the evening.
