A Largs man who now teaches in Sweden has asked 'News' readers if anyone can help in identifying people in an old photo of Largs Territorials during the Great War.

Christopher Hill, 40, said: "Robert Hill enlisted in the Largs Territorials. Most of his battalion would see action in Gallipoli though Battery Quarter Master Sergeant Hill was sent to Salonika in 1916 where a mosquito would bring his war to an early end. He contracted malaria and, like his brother in France, was honourably discharged.

"This photo was taken during training in Bedford in 1914."

The Largs Territorials were training in Bedford as part of the Bute Mountain Battery of the 4th Highland Brigade.

Chris said: "My grandfather sent it to his mum saying she would recognise some of the faces. I wonder if any of the readers of the wee paper could identify their ancestors in it."

"I contacted the Ayrshire Heritage Centre in Saltcoats who sent me copies of the wee paper from 1914-1915.

" My grandfather, Robert wasn't sent to the front until later and contracted malaria which probably saved his life in Salonica"
