Skelmorlie Shore Road has been without street lights for the past month, and the problem won't be fixed until early in the new year.

Concerns were raised regarding the recent primary school nativity at Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay Parish Church held on the Tuesday before Christmas, given the amount of children and grandparents going to the event.

Resident Billie Walker alerted the primary school head teacher to the situation before the service.

Speaking to the 'News', Billie said: "The lights have been off for a few weeks now - I called North Ayrshire Council but it is a big job so they gave us the number for Transerv.

At least six of us called explaining that the school service was on and how dangerous it is.

"They assured us they would call us back with an update but nothing so far - it was quite scary round the church last night."

Residents took to social media to voice their ongoing disappointment at the blackout.

Another person who has complained about the issue is former Labour candidate for Cunninghame North Johanne Baxter on the twitter feed, after she alerted North Ayrshire Council to the problem in mid-December.

And resident Billie Binnie also took to social media, and said: "There are so many of the street lights not working. Hopefully it's not a serious fault."

A spokeswoman for Transerv said: "The fault was caused by nearby work being carried out by a utilities company. We are currently working to identify to location of the fault with a view to completing the works early in the new year."
