As we endure the 'Beast from the East', we look back to other great snowstorms of the past.

Some of the photos are from the famous snowstorm of 1940 which caused great disruption to the district, with even the railway caked in snow and ice. Indeed, the local railway line was cut off for around seven days. 

The great snowstorm of 1940 resulted in frantic scenes to try and clear the railway tracks.
The snow drifts at Fairlie were 25 feet high, and the weight of the snow caused the waiting room to be crushed on the platform of the Glasgow side. Indeed, Fairlie Station was completely buried. See video clip below

Grahame Ross has provided us with some pictures of Largs Main Street from the 1970s.

And in more recent years, Douglas Park Bowling Club hosted a handy sporting alternative for these ice hockey players!

An igloo was even built in Aubery Cresent by enterprising students in 2013 during the big freeze.
