Concerns were raised at Largs Community Council that the Brisbane Centre was for sale.

Former community councillor Margaret Brown said at the meeting that she had heard that the centre, which is used for community events including the popular summer comedy theatre, was being put on the market by North Ayrshire Council.

However, a North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “The Brisbane Centre is owned by the council, remains in use and is not for sale at the present time.

“While we do not promote asset transfers, there is a defined process which allows community groups to apply.

“We will continue to work with community groups to ensure the most efficient and effective use of both community and Council resources, however, at present there are no plans for the closure or disposal of the property.”

The building has over 200 years of history in the town, and was originally called Bath Hall - indeed, hosted the first public baths, erected by public subscription in 1812 at a cost of £2000, hence the name Bath Street.

The building, late to become The Brisbane Centre, contained spray baths, coffee room, library, and reader’s room, with a caretaker’s house which is now The Green Shutter tearoom.

Last year, North Ayrshire Council have put town halls and other buildings up for grabs for community organisations.

Under the scheme, promoted by the Scottish Government, the council launched Community Asset Transfer to encourage local people to take over the running of community centres and underused buildings.
