Fairlie Community Council have agreed to work with resident Zoe MacLean in her campaign to have public toilets re-instated in the village.
Zoe attended Monday night’s community council meeting in the village, and has outlined her concerns.
She said: “North Ayrshire took the decision to remove public toilets in North Ayrshire. The regrettable decision was taken in an attempt to cut costs and save money An automated toilet facility cost around £26,000 annually to lease from the suppliers. On average the cost of such a toilet is around £39 per person which proved far too costly for North Ayrshire Council to justify.”
Zoe has been informed that the council were under ‘no legal obligation to provide public toilets’, and stated that the problem had led to people feeling the need to urinate and defecate in public places, meaning that the public are ‘subject to the mess that is left behind’.
NAC say that all those who are interested in the development of a new public toilet in Fairlie should write to the council as a group, and potentially, the creation of a public toilet facility could be managed and maintained by the village.
Fairlie CC will ask the council about appropriate funding to create a public toilet which is accessible to all
