LARGS-based charity -Gillian's Saltire Appeal - has welcomed a share of £40,000 raised at the Scottish Open.
Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello, who was crowned champion at Dundonald Links after defeating Callum Shinkwin in a playoff, presented a cheque for £41,000 to Les Ward on behalf of his charity Gillian’s Saltire Appeal and partner organisation Maggie’s Meals.
The money will be split evenly between the charities.
Gillian’s Saltire Appeal was set up by Les in memory of his wife Gillian, who died of cancer 10 years ago.
The charity have a flat in Largs and another one in Millport, where carers or people who suffer from cancer can stay for a week if they are referred by Maggie’s Centres.
Volunteers from the two charities took part in a whole host of initiatives throughout the four-day golf tournament.
This included a long-putt competition.
A magic show was organised by volunteer David Ennis, a member of the Magic Circle, featuring a host of tricks.
Buckets were also carried around during the event and people responded well.
John Wilkie of Gillian’s Saltire Appeal said: “Thanks to everyone for their support at the golf.
“ I was surprised we raised so much.”
