Kames Bay in Millport had some of its weeds removed by council workmen during the past week.

The location has been under scrutiny from some local campaigners as some of the area is protected, but a council strimmer vehicle has been used to cut back on the vegetation this year.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson explained: “Kames Bay beach has been designated for a number of years as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and as such mechanical cleansing of the beach is prohibited.

“However, strimming of vegetation is allowed up to a distance of three metres from the promenade and manual litter-picking is also carried out by our Streetscene team.

“On Thursday (27 July), vegetation within this agreed three-meter zone was cut and raked off. This is the second time this season that the vegetation within the zone has been cut.”

Two beds in Kames Bay were planted with wild flowers, to help the local insect population. Complaints have been received that they look "untidy".

North Ayrshire Council has asked residents to find out what the majority view on these beds are. Do you want the wild flower beds in Kames Bay retained or replaced with grass? Email cumbraeccouncil@gmail.com
