There will be district heating available to a number of individual properties within the new Flatt Road housing development which will be replacing Largs Academy in 2021 when it opens.
District heating is the provision of heat to a number of individual properties from water or steam via a network of insulated pipes.
The communal boilers which act as the heating source can be powered from a range of low-carbon or renewable energy sources.
The district heating scheme will be designed to serve all properties within the development, subject to technical and financial feasibility. The council is progressing similar schemes elsewhere, including at Glencairn House in Stevenston, a 28-unit sheltered housing scheme which is currently under construction.
