It is the dawn of a new era for education in Largs as its long awaited new campus opened last week, and it has already been a great hit with teachers and pupils alike.
Promising to be one of the best super schools in Scotland, the facilities have already drawn great praise with first class sporting facilities and state of the art technology.
The first stage in the opening took place this week – with two primary schools and an Early Years Centre moving into the £52 million facility.
Pupils and staff from St Mary’s Primary and Largs Primary began life in their new school in what promises to be an exciting new era for education in the area.
They were joined by the Early Years children and staff, while secondary pupils are set to move in next month to a schools’ campus described as the ‘best in Scotland’.
Largs Primary Head Teacher Julie Dorrian said: “We’ve all been incredibly excited for this day and we’re sure our young people will thrive in this fantastic facility.
“It has taken an awful lot of work to get to here - and now we are looking forward to a bright and exciting future.”
St Mary’s Primary head teacher Mary Hume said: “What an absolutely magnificent place for the children to learn and for the staff to teach.
“The Campus really does encompass everything you could ask for and it was a real thrill showing the children around and seeing just how excited they were.”
North Ayrshire Council’s Executive Director (Education and Youth Employment) John Butcher added: “The facilities at the Largs Campus are the best in Scotland. We will have the best sport facilities in Scotland, and potentially the UK.
“We have invested heavily in the Early Years Centre and have state-of-the-art facilities that incorporate parent rooms, family rooms and imaginative play and learning areas for our young people.
“We have two theatres – one that is shared by the primary pupils and one for the secondary which is a 350-seater. The sound and lighting systems are as good as any in Scotland.
“Our art department’s terrace has stunning views over Cumbrae, Bute and Arran and will give our young people the chance to work outside and develop their painting, drawing and photography skills in an incredible environment.
“I am so proud of this facility and know that the young people have a fantastic environment in which to attain and achieve.”
The two primary schools will have ultra-modern classrooms and there are breakout spaces for the children. The facility is completely WIFI compliant allowing for learning to take place across the whole school.
The secondary pupils will move into the facility on 18 April.
Independent councillor Ian Murdoch told the 'News' that he is very impressed with the wonderful facilities inside the school, and would be keeping a close eye on the traffic and pedestrian management.
He said: "The classrooms, corridors, dinning area and sports facilities are the best he has ever seen within a school complex. Largs attainment record has always been very good and I think the new Campus can only help to keep that record strong and give our young people the best start in life."
It was an emotional farewell from the old primary school buildings in the town last Tuesday, and they will be making way for new housing in future.
A three month period will be taken to demolish Largs Academy once it is vacated next month and a new ‘flagship’ £19.5m housing development will rise from the ashes in its place, opening in Spring 2021.
