Two Largs Thistle legends have came up with a winning idea to raise funds to get blind veteran John Hutchinson the super specs that he needs to see again.

Steven Quigg and 'News' columnist George Wall - both part of the 1994 Scottish Cup winning side - have set the ball rolling for a charity football match at Barrfields to raise funds for John to get the special glasses.

The Royal British Legion Largs branch have set up a fund to help a ninety year old blind veteran member see again. We recently reported that how John was given the state of the arts spectacles by university boffins to allow him to see his first wife for the first time in a decade.

The veteran was given the amazing state-of-the-art tech specs for a trial run for a few weeks - but they were then taken away for further tests.

Now the finished product has gone on the market for a whopping £2,500 a time - and the local Royal British Legion Largs branch have already stepped in to donate £1,000.

The charity game will be taking place at Barrfields on the evening of Friday 18 May and will be a match between Scotland over 50s and Largs Thistle supporters.

Thistle, who have already had a bucket collection at the recent Cambuslang league fixture, were only too pleased to provide the 3G community pitch at Barrfields for the big game for free.

Secretary of the Royal British Legion, Ruth Gregory said: "I think John has been quite overcome by the response from the public and I am sure he will be absolutely thrilled to bits to know that this football match is happening.

Speaking on behalf of the branch I think we are overcome by the kindness shown to the particular cause and so delighted the general public are supporting it.

"George and Steven must have been moved to do something about it and I think that is absolutely fabulous. Some people just talk about it but don't actually do it - and what they are doing is to be highly commended.

"For their altruism, and to take it a step forward, is wonderful, and it is great to the see the public coming out to help our veterans. We are delighted about the football match."

George said: "Reading the story, the thing that struck me was that he is partially sighted, and was involved in the search for these new spectacles and they work, and sees his wife for the first time in ten years and then they take them away again. Imagine that happening? As soon as I read that, I went down to Largs and spoke to Stuart Rumble of the British Legion, and then I phoned Peter Connor at Barrfields to arrange bucket collections for the Cambuslang game.

"Next thing I put it on Facebook, and Quiggy comes back to me and suggests what about arranging a game.

"The guys were saying if we can help raise another £1500 then it can get Stuart the games he needs. To give the guy the power of sight, and then to have it taken away from him, I was very moved by that. Hopefully we can make a difference."

Largs Thistle President Peter Connor said he was delighted to get involved in the charity match, and said: "If we can make a difference for John then it will be great. George Wall had contacted us and we were more than happy to give the community pitch for free. We raised some money in the bucket collection last week, and we hope to raise a lot more cash for John in the charity match which we are all looking forward to."
