A large sinkhole which appeared on the old Largs road to Greenock has resulted in the route being closed this weekend for emergency repairs.

Pictured had emerged on social media, and Inverclyde Council, who operate this section of the road, have announced that they are closing it this evening while the repairs take place to a large section of road.

The closure will be in place between south of Whinhill Golf Course and the junction of Old Largs Road/Dunrod Road while emergency repairs are carried out.

The road closure is expected to be in place until 6am on Monday 14 May 2018.

A council spokesman said: “Due to a rapid deterioration to up to 30m of the carriageway of Old Largs Road, our roads team is arranging emergency repairs over the weekend.

“We will require to close the road while the work takes place and hope to re-open on Monday morning.  Drivers should leave extra time for journeys and follow the diversions this weekend.”

The total road closure will be in place after the pm peak this evening and will be reopened by 6am on Monday 14 May 2018. Signed diversions will be in place. No access will be available through the works site due to deep excavations required.
