A Largs Academy teacher and keen runner was lucky enough to meet cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy this week.
Mary, who teaches maths, is one of the Glasgow 2018 volunteers for the inaugural European Championships which begin this week.
Mary, who is providing assistance at the triathlon event, told the 'News' that Sir Chris was delightful to speak to, and a true inspiration.
Glasgow and Berlin are co-hosting the event, which will be officially opened today, and runs until August 12.
Cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing, triathlon and aquatics events will be held in Glasgow.
Sir Chris said: “Volunteers underpin major sporting events and they are so often the unsung heroes, setting the tone for the event.
“It was great to have the opportunity to meet so many of them and see the palpable enthusiasm they have for welcoming Europe’s finest athletes to Scotland.
“It is fantastic to see another world-class sporting event being held in Scotland, which has such a great track record of hosting major international events.
“The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was a huge success and I am sure this innovative new multi-sport format for the European Championships will help to elevate it to a whole new level.”
