A COUNCILLOR wants to move the Main Street bus shelter in a bid to end traffic congestion problems in Largs town centre.

Ian Murdoch has written to roads chiefs at North Ayrshire Council and Transerv about the poor flow of traffic exiting the Cumbrae Ferry.

He believes that changing the bus stance could help alleviate a major bottleneck.

Cllr Murdoch said: "The issue with vehicles finding it difficult to join the A78 southbound carriageway after leaving the ferry has been a concern of mine for many years.

"I have stated repeatedly that the pierhead junction and Bath Street junction are not responsible for the poor traffic flow.

"The pedestrian crossing and box junctions work perfectly well and most drivers comply with them.

"I was very pleased when the bus stop was lengthened which has helped the situation some of the time.

"The reason it only works some of the time is because people park in the chevrons prior to the stop which are there to enable the buses to swing in on their approach to enter the stop.

"Cars also park in the stop sometimes which also prevent the two buses from using the stop.

"The main reason the bus stop does not work is because they created a double bus stop and left the bus shelter in the middle where 99 per cent of the buses stop.

"The shelter should have been moved to the head of the stop which would allow the second bus to pull in to the stop behind the first bus, leaving the southbound lane clear for traffic."

Now Mr Murdoch has made an official request for the shelter to be moved.

He said: "I have asked NAC and Transport Scotland to have the shelter moved.

"This problem should be very easy to resolve by prominent road markings in and around the bus stop, law enforcement and most importantly, moving the shelter to the head of the stop."
