A £1m winning scratchcard or lottery winning ticket appears to have been purchased at Morrison's Supermarket in Largs, the 'News' can reveal.

Mystery was sparked by a £1m lottery winning sign appearing in Morrison's Supermarket indicating that a winning ticket had been purchased in the Largs store.

Rumours had been circulating around the town after the sign had appeared next to the customer desk at the lottery ticket stall earlier this month.

Local shoppers had contacted the 'News' after spotting the lottery counter with the sign emblazoned on it with the words 'Millionaire winning ticket sold here'.

However, upon speaking to staff at Morrison's Supermarket, people had been left in the dark with the win, and hadn't even spotted the sign until attention had been drawn to it.

A spokeswoman for the company told the 'News' that they were unaware that they had a lottery winner at the store.

Isobel Smith of Morrison's PLC said: "We are not aware that we have had a winner."

A spokeswoman for Camelot explained: "I can confirm that the regular National Lottery playstation has successfully been upgraded to a gold playstation in the Morrisons store at 4 Irvine Road in Largs.

"This gold upgrade is part of the overall celebrations for The National Lottery creating 5,000 millionaires. To mark the milestone, we wanted to recognise all those retailers who had sold a £1M+ winning ticket (across all games) where the winners had taken publicity or had agreed for the retailers to receive publicity since The National Lottery began in 1994.

"This particular Morrisons store would have had "Millionaire made here" signage in the past and this gold playstation was designed to simply upgrade the old signage with something more eye-catching.

"We'll ensure this is clarified with Morrisons."

Largs had a lotto reason to be cheerful after former residents Colin and Chris Weir won £161m in the Euromillions in 2011 after purchasing their winning ticket at Moorburn Stores in Largs.

And it would appear that lightning has struck twice.

However, the winners of the lucky £1m ticket at Morrison's Supermarket in Largs may have not sought any publicity, the 'News' understands.

A Camelot spokesperson said that while a lottery winner can decide not to take personal publicity, they can agree to the shop where the ticket was sold to get publicity at a later stage.
