Residents in a town centre street endured sleepless nights in Largs during the past week because of noisy roadworks.

The white lining works took place until 3am, and one resident even had to take two days off this work such was the extent of the impact, bringing up the issue with local police and North Ayrshire Council

However, it is Transerv who are the agents of Transport Scotland who have control of the A78 where the excessive sound was causing a misery for residents at Gallowgate Street.

A livid Gary Hume told the 'News': "For two nights last week there has been a company called Markon using heavy and very noisy machinery to paint the road outside.

"This has started at approximately 10pm and went onto 3am.

"I was told to take the matter up with Transerve as they were the contractors.

"I have been forced to take two days off of work because of this.

"I fully intend to escalate this to the very highest level."

MSP Kenneth Gibson said: “Following complaints for local residents, I contacted Transerv which confirmed with their contracting company, Markon Ltd, that the white-lining works have now been completed and no further work will be carried out.

“While Transerv try and take noise disturbance to domestic properties into account, they said a compromise has to be made between disrupting the flow of traffic during the day when the road is busiest and some night-time noise. On this occasion, they judged it best to minimise disruption and carry out the work at night.

“The noise was caused by the burner which burns the old paint off the road. There is no other, quieter machinery available to do this.

“I have suggested that, in future, notifying local residents of the work times, the reasons for them and how long such work will take would be helpful. It is disturbing when even necessary work is carried out and no information is available as to how long it will go on for."

The roadworks were completed at 3am on Friday morning.
