Video footage from surveillance cameras are being analysed after a break-in to the Paddle Steamer in Largs.

The Wetherspoons pub was illegally entered during the early hours of Friday morning and money was raided from one of the fruit machines.

The premises did not re-open until Friday afternoon in order to allow for a police investigation to take place.

Inspector Colin Convery of Largs Police said: "Premises were broken into overnight Thursday into Friday. Cash was stolen from within. Enquiry is ongoing by locality team with support from CID. This includes a review of both public and private space CCTV."

A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon said "We can confirm that one of the patio side windows at The Paddle Steamer pub (Largs) was smashed open, and someone entered the premises at approx. 3:30am. They went to the fruit machine nearest the rear of the pub, smashed it open and removed the cash.

"They then attempted to rob the second fruit machine, but the 'smoke cloak' security system activated and, although the machine was damaged, the money was not taken.

"The pub reopened at 12:50pm, following police investigations."

Since opening in the summer of 2017, it is the second time that the Largs Wetherspoons bar has been targeted by thieves after a smoke alarm was inadvertently set off by intruders.
