RESIDENTS will get the first chance to see new proposals for a massive council housing development in Largs next week.

The planned developments at the former Largs Academy site and at St Colm's sheltered housing complex form part of the council’s vision to deliver more than 1,300 new properties by 2024 – one of the most ambitious council house building programmes in the UK.

North Ayrshire Council’s housing services will host a special consultation event at Largs Campus on 4 March.

The event will allow people to view the final plans and house designs, discuss any concerns about the works with the contractor and obtain information regarding site access arrangements and traffic management proposals.

Cabinet Member for Place, Councillor Jim Montgomerie, said: “Our ambitious programme has already delivered hundreds of modern, energy-efficient homes across North Ayrshire and we are well on track to build more than 1,300 new council houses by 2024.

“We also have other housing proposals at different stages of development so we are not standing still – we are determined to help change people’s lives for the better and transforming communities in every part of North Ayrshire is a key part of that aim.”

The proposed development at the former Largs Academy site on Flatt Road will provide 122 homes, which will include 22 supported accommodation houses and a 28-unit sheltered housing complex.

In addition, the council plans to develop a sustainable district heating scheme to provide affordable heating for all of the homes on the site.

Building works at Flatt Road are expected to start in the spring and be completed during 2021.

St Colm's Place sheltered housing complex will be completely rebuilt to provide 29 units of one and two bedrooms. All of the homes will be accessible and designed to 'dementia friendly' standards to promote independent living. The works are currently anticipated to commence during spring 2020 and be completed during spring 2021.

Plans for both developments will be available to view at the two drop-in consultation events. The first session will be held between 1 and 3pm and the second session will be held between 4 and 6pm.

Although this is a drop-in event, you can book a place by calling telephone 01294 324031 or emailing developmentandstrategy@north-ayrshire.gov.uk by Friday.

The proposals will be available to view online at www.northayrshire.community/consultations/open-consultations later in the month.
