LARGS could be in line for an eco-friendly machine which will pay people for recycling plastic bottle.

Community councillor Anne Carson is determined to get the 'recycle and reward' scheme introduced to the town after hearing of the reverse vending machines being trialled in Morrison stores elsewhere.

The machines allow you to recycle plastic and aluminium in return for money or in-store vouchers.

Anne said: "A recycling machine that pays you would definitely be an incentive for people rather than just throwing cans away, especially if we can also reuse the material to make new things.

"For the supermarkets it’s a win win A customers can also then redeem the tokens for food.

"Largs Community Council is always looking at environmentally friendly ideas for the town.

"We heard about Morrisons in East Kilbride installing a trial aluminium can recycling machine so thought that is something we should explore.

"There was limited information, however I’ve been in touch with Morrison’s to request one for Largs and they were very enthusiastic, so fingers crossed we can make it happen.

"I really hope these machines become the norm, certainly in our neck of the woods. As anyone who has taken part in a beach clean can testify, our throwaway society is polluting and spoiling our towns and beaches for generations to come - and that is not fair.

She added: "When I was in Spain I bought jewellery from an elderly gentleman who buys rolls of recycled aluminium and hand makes them at home.

"It be fantastic if someone in our area made this kind of environmentally friendly jewellery from what we put in this machine.

"The necklace I have, pictured, is surprisingly lightweight and never tarnishes."

The reverse vending machines rewards individuals for recycling by providing money or vouchers in return for empty plastic bottles.

The machines accept all such items that have a barcode and Morrisons own-brand bottles.

Customers can return a maximum of 20 items per day and receive 100 Morrisons More points in the form of a coupon for each one brought back, which can then be spent in store.

Alternatively, customers can choose to donate the cash to the supermarket’s charity partner, CLIC Sargent.

The Scottish Government have also made a commitment to pilot the incentivised recycling systems for single use plastic, glass and aluminium containers in locations across Scotland.
