A LARGS conjurer told how he once wowed one of the Rolling Stones during an impromptu magic show at 40,000 feet.

Scotty McLean, 58, has travelled the world meeting the rich and famous, but says performing for Mick Jagger after a chance meeting at an airport was a career highlight.

He explained: "We were both boarding the plane, although I didn't recognise Mick at first.

"He was with his kids, a nanny and a bodyguard. As we were getting on the plane I handed him my card and said that if he wanted to see a magic trick during the flight to let me know.

"He barely looked at the card and just put it in his pocket, so I thought there was no chance.

"We were both in business class and sitting across the aisle from one another and half way through the flight he asked me to show his kids a trick.

"They loved it.

"Afterwards he gave me his autograph but I just put it in my pocket and didn't look at it.

"When I got home I read it and it said 'To Scotty, a great magician, even on a plane'."

While he rubbed shoulders with many stars such as Michael Keaton, James Doohan and Robert Duval, Scotty says his most magical moment was meeting his wife - on the iconic Love Boat.

He met spouse Diana in 1993 whilst performing on the Pacific Princess, the boat used for the hit 1970s TV series.

He said: "I met Diana on the bridge of the Pacific Princess while in America.

"I was doing a gig in San Diego and working on the ship.

"Back then they used to do tours of the bridge of the boat and I was just sitting there with a pal when I seen Diana.

"I said to him then and there, 'she's the one'. I knew it as soon as I saw her.

"We started dating and when things started getting serious, my agent said I should put her in the act so we could travel together.

"So we wrote a performance and bought some bigger props and costumes. She was trained at the Magic Castle in Hollywood and off we went.

"She had never been on a stage before but I taught her the tricks of the trade.

"Part of the act was mind reading and she took over that - and she was very good."

Scotty started performing the cruise circuit as a magician at just 19 years old when an agent spotted his talent at a show in Blackpool.

Since then he has been in high demand all over the world, as well as doing a residency in Los Angeles.

Scotty also performed for British troops during the Gulf War in 1991 and has since been awarded a medal for his service.

His talents have taken him around the globe, rubbing shoulders with famous magicians including David Copperfield and Paul Daniels.

However he says he owes his love of magic to a trick set that his mother bought him out of Tam Sheppard's joke shop in Glasgow when was a little boy.

He also met Star Trek's very own Scotty, James Doohan, at a dinner at the Magic Castle.

Magic was only part of Scotty's career, as he also dabbled in some TV and film work, most notably he was cast as Michael Keaton's stand in for the film 'A Shot at Glory.'

Scotty has now retired and is enjoying a relaxing life in Largs.
