GREENOCK Boxing Club welterweight Martin Harkin’s recent run of bad luck continued at the weekend after a stand-in fighter got caught up in immigration at Glasgow Airport.

Harkin was due to take on Ally Black for the vacant Celtic Welterweight title at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow only for the Kirkintilloch fighter to pull out injured.

That led to Harkin agreeing to a late opponent change - only to see that called off too after problems at customs.

The 26-year-old has already seen two Celtic title shots called off at short notice.

Harkin accepted a last-minute exhibition bout with super-middleweight Chris Wood - an opponent three weight divisions above Harkin - to keep himself sharp.

After a cagey start Harkin looked to move into the centre of the ring in the second round but Wood’s size made for a difficult night for the welterweight who relied on his excellent head movement.

There was no telling it was an exhibition fight with both fighters looking to land big in the third round with Harkin happy to use the full ring before moving into the middle to exchange.

Wood’s power was evident but Harkin was still happy to trade, landing his own efforts and leaving himself open at times with his chin tested midway through the fourth.

It was a much-needed workout for Harkin who will be hoping it’s fifth time lucky in his quest for Celtic glory.
