DRIVERS are facing ten days of misery after roads bosses revealed plans to resurface 2.5km of the A78.

Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are set to carry out the works at Ashcraig House between Largs and Skelmorlie from Friday.

The organisation are proposing the closure of the trunk road over two separate weekends, with diversions put in place.

Jonathan Dyer, Scotland TranServ’s design lead on the project, said: “We have been working in consultation with local community councils and emergency services to schedule these works for a time of minimal disruption. Scotland TranServ is proposing to combine two resurfacing schemes into one to further reduce the impact.

“The proposed resurfacing scheme is being scheduled ahead of the busy Easter holiday period, and in advance of the summer season.

"This is a lengthy resurfacing programme, and therefore will require closure of the A78 over two weekends.”

Works are currently proposed over the following times: 8pm Friday 5 to 6am Monday 8 April, 8pm Friday 12th to 6am Monday 15 April

Alan Murray, Scotland TranServ’s principal road design engineer, added: “This is an important trunk road connecting a number of communities across North Ayrshire and Inverclyde. We will have additional plant and materials in place to mitigate against any unforeseen delays.

"The signed diversion route has been implemented on previous schemes on the A78. It will add significant time to journeys in the area and therefore we would ask drivers to plan accordingly.”

Access to Routenburn Road and Loch Thom Road will be restricted to local access only.
