IT was a gala day fit for a queen as Cumbrae made its latest royal appointment.

The island crowned its 55th queen as primary six pupil Molly McKiggan was given the honour.

Molly and her royal entourage were piped into the official ceremony in the Garrison's sunken gardens on Saturday to a rapturous welcome.

Assisting her were her ladies in waiting, Holly Hamilton, Madison Newton and Alisha Hagen.

Also joining in were primary three page boys Ronan McColsky, Kieran McColsky, Kade Fergusson, William Kennedy, TJ McKenzie and Jack Armour.

The youngster's families and friends cheered as the new queen enjoyed her big moment, as well as three clergy, a representative from the police, the tourist association and organiser Suki McGregor.

Making for a truly traditional day, 148 classic cars also revved onto the island for the Classic Car Rally.

With the two events in tandem, the newly-appointed Queen Molly was ready to begin her duties right away by presenting the winners with their prizes.

Now in its sixth year, the Classic Car Rally welcomed a record number of entries for their biggest event to date.

Organiser Jimmy Newton said: "It was an absolutely outstanding day, we couldn't have asked for any better.

"It was an incredible number of cars that came over for the event, beating the 80 we had last year.

"It was amazing seeing them all lined up at the Garrison. I don't know how many more we could have fitted in though, the place was packed!

"The weather was great and everyone had a brilliant day.

"It is a special event for the island, there really is something for everyone to go around and have a look and get involved."

Organiser of the Cumbrae Queen ceremony, Andrew McLachlan, said: "It's good to keep these traditions alive."
