A LARGS fishmonger has become the first in Scotland to net a prestigious award for his skill and dedication to the trade.

C Fayre's John Watson says he was 'thrilled' to be given the Master Fishmonger honour at a ceremony in London at the Fishmonger Standard Awards.

As the first in Scotland to boast the title, it recognised John's lifetime contribution to the trade at the Aitkin Street business.

John said: “It has been a great honour to receive this prestigious award and I am proud to be the first in Scotland and to be accredited by The Worshipful Company of Fishmongers.

"Our aim at C Fayre has always been to sell the freshest and most sustainable fish, picked up daily from the Glasgow fish market.

"We also ensure we provide excellent and friendly customer service at our shop where we supply our customers throughout the UK.

"People travel from far and wide to sample our extensive range of fresh fish.

"Over the years we have built up a great relationship with all of our customers, many of whom we now class as friends."

A Master Fishmonger is described as 'an innovative, knowledgeable and highly-skilled fishmonger, with a wealth of experience in the industry'.

It also requires the person to have their own fishmonger business or work in senior management, supporting training and development initiatives and act as an advocate for the industry.

The ceremony was hosted by Alison Freeman, programme manager at the Fishmongers’ Company.
