A LARGS charity store has shut up shop - only one year after it was saved from closure.

The Ayrshire Cancer Support premises in Bath Street has officially closed its doors after over 15 years of business in the town.

Whilst the charity is still operating seven other outlets in Ayrshire, it says it could no longer sustain its Largs operation.

Despite the unit undergoing a major revamp last year as part of their retail development strategy, the charity have struggled to keep the shop afloat.

It had already faced closure last year when it struggled to man the operation following the retirement of two of its volunteers.

The charity had survived however after a successful appeal for fresh faces and a major internal revamp, which included the installation of new toilets, flooring, walls, display panels and cases.

A spokesperson for Ayrshire Cancer Support told the News cash constraints had forced their hand.

They said: "We took the decision to close the Largs shop as it was no longer financially viable.

"Our shops are used as a means to raise funds to support our vital services throughout Ayrshire.

"The Largs shop was unfortunately not able to make a surplus after paying rent and overheads.

"We do continue to offer services in Largs and North Ayrshire to people who are affected by cancer, however we must now find an alternative method to raise the much-needed funds in this area to enable us to do this.

"Should anyone from the area need to access our free patient transport, mental health support or complementary therapies to help alleviate the symptoms of cancer and its treatment, please contact us on 01563 538008."

The charity provides practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer throughout the region.
