SECURITY cameras are set to be installed at Largs Thistle's home ground after a wrecking spree by vandals caused hundreds of pound of damage.

The yobs smashed benches and burnt holes in the playing surface at Barrfields Park - with the club's vice president labelling their behaviour as 'a disgrace'.

Fuming David Blackwood has vowed to bring in a CCTV security system to combat the problem.

The community club is open most evenings of the week for football and is widely used by local sides.

But once the gates are locked and the pitch closed off, youths have been caught jumping the perimeter fencing and causing damage.

The vandalism issue has reared its head a number of times in the recent past but the club is determined to take a tougher approach after the latest incident.

David said: "We are now looking at bringing CCTV in at Barrfields.

"It is disappointing, but we feel that we have no other choice and it is going to cost the club a significant amount of money.

"To see a number of holes burnt into the 3G surface and the benches damaged is really disappointing. It's shocking behaviour.

"The pitch has been burnt in four or five spots and there has also been a lot of rubbish, including beer bottles, left scatted all over the park. "We did a tidy up and we were shocked by what we found."

Corner flags and football nets were also damaged and stolen during the recent incident and last year one of the dug-outs was set on fire by yobs.

David added: "The CCTV will be going in, there's no option really. The bottom line is that the youngsters shouldn't be there when the gates are locked.

"It is disgraceful that this is happening.

"We keep hearing about being responsible for making our communities a better place but what chance do you have when youths are behaving like this?".
