A DIAMOND duo celebrated a dazzling 60 years of marriage in their favourite holiday destination - Millport!

Malcolm, 84, and Marion Ferguson, 83, joined family for a celebration at the island's golf club to mark their special anniversary.

Three generations were present for the big bash, with family travelling from far and wide for the big occasion.

The island has always held a special place in the couple's heart, having spent decades holidaying there each summer.

Marion and Malcolm tied the knot on June 26 1959 at the Calton Old Parish Church in Parkhead - and knew there was only one place they wanted to be 60 years on.

Daughter Lynn Thomson, 58, said: "My mum has been coming to Cumbrae since she was a child. "She came here during the war from Glasgow as her friends's aunt married a Millport man who was a prisoner of war in Japan.

"My mum and her parents spent lots of time visiting the couple and so began our long association with Millport.

"We came along each year since the 1960s and have spent so much happy time on the island with aunts, cousins and uncles.

"We have very fond memories of Millport so this was the only place we were going to go for the big celebration. Even when I had my own children, we have always come here.

"We have been staying at a house in West Bay throughout the week - and the champagne has been flowing!"

Over the years, the family have made some great friendships on the island, including with Mr and Mrs Clark who recently retired after three decades plus at The Tavern Bar.

Marion was a shorthand typist and Malcolm was a mechanic and workshop manager in the car trade.

Asked for the secret to her parents' long marriage, Lynn said: "They are not afraid to speak their minds to each other!".

Although having never stayed permanently on the island, they are never far away, and it was a common sense location for the big anniversary.

Lynn added: "My mum remembers her parents spending a lot of time on the bowling green as they were both very good bowlers so we spent an afternoon there last week and the local people were very welcoming. "Millport has lost none of its charm - we just love it here."
