ST Mary's Primary in Largs has received a glowing report from inspectors following a recent visit to the school.

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education report found 'high quality learning and teaching' across the classes, with a 'nurturing climate for learning'.

The major process of change to move St Mary’s Primary to a new location was also addressed and was described as being 'well led by senior leaders', with praise for the creation of an inclusive environment for children.

The report added: The aspirational vision of the headteacher to drive forward changes in the school and create a culture of collaboration. Together with all staff, there is a shared commitment to lead change which will continue to improve outcomes for all learners.

"The nurturing climate for learning, where all children are valued. There is a strong, positive ethos, underpinned by gospel values, where all members of the school community are treated with respect.

"The high-quality learning and teaching found across the school, supported by staffs’ commitment to professional learning to meet the needs of all children.

"The strong partnerships with the local community and businesses. These are enriching children’s learning experiences and developing important skills for life, learning and work."

Areas for improvement were also identified during the visit, including continuing to develop attainment in literacy and numeracy.

The report added: "We are confident that the school has the capacity to continue to improve and so we will make no more visits in connection with this inspection.

"North Ayrshire Council will inform parents/carers about the school’s progress."

The report also praised the work done to ensure a smooth transition from the former school in Linn Avenue to the new campus in Alexander Avenue - as well as praising headteacher Mary Hume.

It says: "The headteacher has been in post for over six years and has developed a very good understanding of children’s and families’ individual needs across the school community. She is providing effective leadership and, supported well by the principal teacher, has a clear aspirational vision for the school. She is well respected by children, staff, parents and the school’s partners. Almost all parents who completed the pre-inspection questionnaire feel the school is well led."

The school was also praised for its outward looking approach and keenness to be involved in community events.

A delighted Mrs Hume said: "A huge thank you to all staff, pupils, parents and wider community for their contribution to our outstanding HMIE Report."
