A Sikorsky coastguard helicopter hovered over Largs bay after an emergency 999 call.
A Coastguard spokesman explained: "A distress beacon was used by a person when he was cleaning his boat - it was just an accident. There was no danger and it was a false alarm with good intent.
"We left shortly afterwards."
