Rail users deserve 'value for money' as a Largs based MSP has hit out at ScotRail after fare rises were revealed.

This week the Scottish Government announced that fares on ScotRail services will rise by 2.8 per cent for peak tickets and 1.8 per cent for off peak.

The increase, which will apply to season tickets and anytime singles and returns, is determined by the July 2019 Retail Price Index (RPI), which stands at 2.8%.

It is used to set the rate of increases on ScotRail services, with regulated ScotRail peak fares capped at the level of the RPI.

Jamie Greene, list MSP for West of Scotland, said: "Train services are still falling under the contractual obligations set out by ScotRail and Abellio.

"Over the last month, the franchise fell 2 per cent below its punctuality target for trains passing through Largs, although there has been a general improvement in performance over recent months.

Mr Greene, who is the Scottish Conservative spokesman for transport, highlighted that rail commuters in Largs, Fairlie and West Kilbride have faced a series of delays and cancellations in recent months.

He went on to say that commuters deserve “value for money, not frequent delays and packed carriages."

“Over the last several months, commuters have had to put up with far too many delays and cancellations on overcrowded trains.

"Although there have been improvements recently, ScotRail still aren’t performing at the contractually mandated level.

“Commuters deserve value for money. Right now they’re still not getting that.”
