AN SOS has been issued in a bid to safeguard a string of major community extravaganzas - including Yuletide and Largs Live.

Largs Events chairman Ian Murdoch says new people are desperately needed behind the scenes or Largs could run the risk of seeing them disappear.

An AGM was held last week at Largs Library but was poorly attended.

Concerns have now been raised as to the long-term future of the events, with a renewed call for locals with event management experience to come forward.

Ian said: "We had a low turn-out, which is a concern.

"The AGM procedurally went well but we have the same issues which affect most other committees in that we have a lack of numbers.

"Unless we get an increase in people wishing to join the committee it will be very difficult to drive anything forward in future.

"We want to operate these events in a positive manner in but unless we get a strong committee on board we can't push anything. This applies to Largs Live, Largs Yuletide and any other festival we look to stage in future.

"We are hopeful that there is a lot of expertise in the community and we would hope that people step up to the plate.

"There is a lot of work involved - but it is the case of many hands make light work.

"However without more people coming forward, it puts events such as Largs Live and the Yuletide in jeopardy."

The Largs Yuletide event has been running for over 30 years in the town, while the Largs Live music festival has become a popular date in the local events calendar, with local pubs serving up a cavalcade of live music over three-days.

At this year's AGM, Mr Murdoch as voted in as the new chairman of the Largs Events group while Alan Hill became vice-chair.

Largs Events has ran a number of successful events in the area and used to run a summer family weekend at Broomfields.

During the past 12 months, it has taken on the running of Largs Live - which was heralded as a great success - and Largs Yuletide for the first time, bringing a Snow Globe to Gallowgate Square, live music and street entertainment.
