A LOCAL family is hosting a very special music day in Largs for a mental health charity close to their heart.

Suzanne Fairlie is organising the fundraiser on 24 November for the benefit of Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) after she sadly lost her husband last year.

Sons Derek and Max are both talented musicians and will be performing on the big day.

A host of other top bands from the west of Scotland will also be taking part in the big fundraiser.

Suzanne said: "Mental health affects all walks of life and all backgrounds, regardless of whether you are rich or poor.

"The reason that I am doing this big event is that sadly I lost my husband last year. He was a good man, someone who was very committed to his family.

"We felt it was very important to do something for SAMH. They do so much important work in the community for raising awareness about mental health and improving people's lives.

"So many people who have been affected by issues concerning mental health, including other families in the Largs area. I felt by having an all day music event it could be something for everyone. I hope the town gets behind it and supports such a good cause."

Suzanne also highlighted the great work that has been going on at Largs Academy and praised Corrie Shephard - North Ayrshire's Young Citizen of the Year - for helping set up the mental health ambassadors scheme at the school.

She said: "What Corrie has done is fantastic. Her work is improving the lives of our young people every day."

Family and friends are rallying round and already local businesses have been displaying their generosity.

Suzanne added: "We are thrilled that so many live bands have signed up to the event and I would like to thank Stephen McDonald, who has offered us Lounge for free. Largs Printing Company are providing all the tickets and posters for free too, which is so generous.

"100 per cent of the ticket sales will be going to SAMH."

The event will run from 3 to 9pm and there will also be facepainting and children's activities from 2pm.

Derek's band, The Yacht Rock Crew, will be performing as well as Dougie Robertson from The Springsteen Sessions, Ember Fall and a host of others.

Thornburn and Farrell will be kicking off proceedings at 3pm. Member Francis Thorburn is a recognisable face as Kim in BBC soap opera River City.

Suzanne said: "I am hoping that everyone comes out on the day.

"It is going to be a very special one for our family all round and it will have something for everyone."

Suzanne will also be collecting for SAMH at The Springsteen Sessions when it takes place at Barrfields Theatre on Saturday 28 September.
