There will be ghostly goings-on during a walk on Friday 27 September in Millport.

As part of the September Weekend celebrations on the island, a ghost walk has been arranged, setting off from the Royal George Hotel with a number of surprises in store.

People should meet next to Millport Pier at 7pm.

A look back into the 'News' archive has found an unusual ghost story from the past on the Isle of Cumbrae.

During January 1878, rumour and speculation had been rife regarding reports of a ghost which had been seen hovering between the doors of Barend Street in Millport.

An islander rose early in the morning and upon opening the street door, was horror struck at being confronted by the 'ghost'.

She instantly closed the door in its face, and dashed to her husband's bed and awakened him.

He made a careful search through the house for the cause and then proceeded to the door where the apparition was spotted.

Upon opening the door, the ghost immediately, and literally, fell on him.

He discovered the supposed haunted monster was nothing more than a bundle of straw, deftly formed and tied in a garb, with its brainless head enveloped in a woman's old bonnet.

The relieved gentleman consoled himself with the acquisition of a 'guid piece of cloth' but his wife immediately gave information to the police, who were engaged in the search the perpetrators of this practical joke.

The September Illuminations weekend has been running in Millport for over 80 years including a range of fun family events including a sandcastle competition, a ghost walk, and fireworks all lined up for this year - and much more.

It takes place over the weekend of 27-29th September.
