MOTORISTS face a weekend of traffic chaos after roads bosses revealed they are to close a stretch of the A78 - for almost three days.

The trunk road is to be closed between Eglinton Terrance and Skelmorlie Castle Road in Skelmorlie, resulting in a length 40 minute diversion for motorists.

The works are part of Transport Scotland’s road management programme and will see a 510 metre stretch resurfaced.

Anthony Chambers, Scotland TranServ’s project design lead on the works, said: "In order to complete this short programme of resurfacing as quickly and safely as possible, it will be necessary to close the trunk road over the weekend of Friday 4th to Monday 7th of October.

“Scotland TranServ has been working in consultation with the local authority, emergency services and key stakeholders to minimise the impact of this £229k programme on the local community and businesses.

"Works have therefore been scheduled outwith the busy holiday periods.

"Because of the nature of the carriageway in this section of the A78, it is necessary to close the trunk road over the weekend, in order to protect the health and safety of our workers and the travelling public. Lengthy diversions will be in place over the weekend and we would ask drivers to allow plenty of extra time for their journeys.”

It will be necessary to close the trunk road from 8pm on Friday 4 October until 6am on Monday 7 October.

Lengthy diversions mean that drivers have been advised to allow an additional 40 minutes for their journeys.
