A LARGS business is giving away free meals to ensure struggling locals have access to fresh produce.

The Fish Works is gifting vouchers to the local food bank entitling people to free fish and chips as part of the annual Seafood Week campaign.

The drive is a national initiative aimed at encouraging people to eat more fresh fish and the popular seafront trader say they want to ensure the whole community, no matter their circumstances, can benefit.

Owner Tiffany Irvin said: "We have donated vouchers and are collecting cash in the shop for the food bank as part of the campaign.

"We wanted our part in the initiative to be bigger and better than previous years, so decided to offer different daily specials with a different type of food each day, free taster opportunities and have decorated the shop - as well as offering free fish and chips for kids.

"But we also wanted to use the week to help one of our local charities. We chose the food bank as they help so many local individuals and families.

"We felt that by handing in vouchers it would allow some of their users to come along and try some fresh fish and something new or different they may not have tried before or been in a position to enjoy for a while.

"I personally donate to the food bank when I’m doing my shopping in Largs but this is something different through the business.

"It gives everyone the chance to eat more fish, which is ultimately the main aim of seafood week."

Each voucher entitles people to a free 'half works' fish and chips.

Tiffany added: "The charity will given them to individuals and also to families."

The food bank, located in Clark Memorial Church, say the scheme has been a boom with users.

They told the News: "This was a fantastic gesture and something we very much appreciated."

As part of the initiative, the Fish Works also provided fish and chips to Douglas Park Nursery for their lunch to encourage more young people to try seafood.
