GIRL power is growing at a Gourock school as pupils get active as part of a national campaign.

Zumba, gymnastics, netball, football, basketball and walking are some of the activities being promoted at Clydeview Academy.

They held an event as part of a national campaign by sportscotland to encourage more girls to get active.

PE teacher Leanne McKissick hopes the dedicated sports day will inspire more girls to take up sport.

She told the Tele: "This is a national scheme run by sportscotland which aims to get girls more physically active.

"The girls had the choice of taking part in football, netball, gymnastics, zumba, basketball and walking.

"They also tackled an assault course and the home economics department made healthy snacks and the business department led the walks."

Ms McKissick hopes the day will encourage more girls to take regular exercise.

She added: "I hope now that they are going to have even more participation in the after-school sports clubs."

Pupil Alex McFarlane, 13, said she had a ball at the all day sporting event.

The S3 pupil said: "Some girls don't take part in these things but I think everyone enjoyed it as we got to choose what we do.

"There was something for everyone.

"I like challenging myself so I took part in the gymnastics as it's something that I like to do.

"Hopefully girls can see how fun sport can be and that it's not always something that they have to force themselves to do.

"Even just going for a walk with your friends is good fun."
