Tributes have been paid to Largs Euromillions winner Colin Weir who has sadly passed away at the age of 71 after a short illness.

Colin, and former wife Chris, made news headlines around the world in 2011 when they scooped the biggest ever lotto win of £161m and set up The Weir Charitable Trust.

A spokeswoman for his personal lawyers said tonight: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Colin Weir early today after a short illness.

“We would ask for privacy for his family and friends at this distressing time.

“No further comment will be made other than to offer sincere thanks to the staff of University Hospital Ayr for their care and compassion.”

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was “incredibly sad” and paid tribute.

She said: “Colin’s determination and generosity in the cause of Scottish independence cannot be overstated and was hugely appreciated.

“The SNP and the independence movement has lost a true friend today and we will miss him dearly.”

Colin and Chris contributed to many local causes including sports facilities, a residential care home, the Waverley and a number of talented young sport stars. He was an STV cameraman during his working career before winning his fortune. The winning ticket was purchased at Moorburn Stores in Largs.

Their philanthropy was well known throughout the Largs area, and the couple moved from their original house in Inverclyde View to Knock Castle.

In recent years, the couple moved to South Ayrshire before going their separate ways after 38 years of marriage.

Colin’s love of football saw the Weirs donate £700,000 for an all weather sports pitch at Barrfields which is regularly used today by community clubs of all ages. Investment in Inverclyde Sports Centre including the Weir 3G indoor sports facility as well as other local sports clubs ensures a lasting legacy in the town.

There was a minute’s applause at Barrfields Park on Saturday before Largs Thistle’s match with Clydebank in memory of Colin who was honorary president of the club.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

The Weirs have also been passionate SNP supporters and contributed to the 2014 Yes campaign and have been big donors to the political party.

In recent months the father of two purchased a majority stake in a seven-figure move through making him Partick Thistle’s biggest shareholder. A stand at the club is also named after the lotto winner.

The £161 million prize was the UK's biggest win until October when an anonymous ticket holder landed a £170 million jackpot.
