Gritters will be out on priority routes in Largs and surrounding area this evening.

The forecast for Wednesday night is wintry showers and sub-zero temperatures.

Gritters will treat Priority 1 Routes from 7pm and 3am with patrols continuing until 11am.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesman said: "Our fleet of gritting vehicles with snow ploughs are on 24 hour standby. Our staff constantly monitor weather forecast information.

"When snow and ice is forecast, we operate a priority system to ensure the most important and busiest routes are treated first. We aim to treat as many roads and footpaths as possible."

"With limited resources available footways and footpaths will only be treated when considered necessary (e.g. heavy snowfall or extensive icing)."

Priority 1 Routes are as follows - Urban shopping areas and precincts, footway access to schools, emergency facilities including fire and rescue, police and ambulance services, hospitals, sheltered housing, doctors surgeries and health centres etc;
