PAVEMENT repairs in Largs Main Street repeatedly delayed by bad weather have been branded a 'shambles' by a local councillor.

The works, which were due to take place at the end of last year. were rescheduled for late January before being moved again in this month.

Independent councillor Ian Murdoch lettered Transerv over the recent delays and called for additional work to fix cracking and bumpy pavements throughout the town centre.

He said: "I have received complaints from some of the businesses.

"I was under the impression that we were getting the whole pavement repaired from Crawford Street to Bath Street, including a lowered kerb at the corner of Bath Street, but it seems this might not be the case.

"In the past I have raised the condition of this pavement, as well as the pavements outside Costa, the Co-op, Wetherspoons and on the other side of Gallowgate/Main Street from the Brisbane Hotel to Bellmans Close.

"There has been very little done to these walkways over the 22 years that I have been involved in local affairs.

"Why can’t the pavements in a very busy visitor destination, one of Scotland’s best seaside towns, not be resurfaced to a reasonable standard?"

The latest works are now complete but Cllr. Murdoch says he is unhappy with the final job.

He said: "It is a complete shambles.

"The surface is uneven in places, it is not smooth and damage has been done to some of the shopfronts.

"I am calling for a full site visit with all the elected councillors and roads authorities so I can show the problems to them directly. "It just doesn't look like the finished article and I am very disappointed.

"This is supposed to be a showpiece tourism town and I really expected better."

Cllr. Murdoch did say that an imprinted concrete used at the junction with Bath Street was satisfactory but questioned why the same surface wasn't used for the rest of the pavement.

Constituents had contacted local MSP Kenneth Gibson after a number of people suffered falls on the Main Street pavement, resulting in Transerv carrying out emergency repairs.

A Scotland TranServ spokesperson said: “Resurfacing of the Largs footway was last month delayed due to extreme weather conditions.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their patience while this important programme was carried out."

The News understands further pavement maintenance is due to take place outside Co-op and Wetherspoons area over coming months.

The spokesperson added: “Following completion of resurfacing works on the A78 Largs footway, Scotland TranServ operatives have cleaned down all shop fronts and re-fixed dislodged tiles.

"Pedestrian management barriers and cones have also been removed.

"Works elsewhere in the area were to repair patches of defective footway and therefore are of a similar style to the existing surface."
