SERVICES have now fully resumed following the train derailment at Eastleigh Station almost a month ago.

This comes after six 52-tonne wagons derailed from the track on January 28 due to an "infrastructure fault", which caused the line between Southampton and Basingstoke to be blocked.

While temporary track was built to allow some services to resume, many trains from London Waterloo were unable to stop at Eastleigh, following the incident.

As previously reported, all Network Rail services between Southampton and Winchester were cancelled this weekend, while workers replaced the damaged sets of points.

Mark Killick, route director for Network Rail Wessex, said: "I am sorry to passengers who have experienced disruption to services over the last few weeks.

"Given that many trains from London Waterloo are currently unable to call at Eastleigh following the derailment, we needed to find a solution to replace the damaged points as soon as possible."

Work took place on February 22 and February 23, and services fully resumed this morning.

The derailment caused significant damage to the tracks at Eastleigh Station, which caused travel chaos for passengers across the region, as they faced long delays and cancellations for almost a month.

As previously stated by Network Rail, the incident was caused by an infrastructure fault after a small number of fastenings gave way.

This led to track spread, meaning the two rails impacted were no longer the correct distance apart.

Since the incident, Network Rail has carried out "enhanced precautionary" inspections of all similar fastenings across the Wessex route, with no additional areas of concern identified through this work.

While services have resumed at Eastleigh Station, disruption is still expected in certain parts of the region due to the landslide on the train route between Romsey and Salisbury on February 18.

It is expected that it will take up to two months to repair the railway, meaning replacement busses are being run between Salisbury and Southampton, vie Redbridge and Millbrook.
