THE operators of Christchurch pub said they were "incredibly surprised and perplexed" by a negative food hygiene report their venue received – and added that they are "looking forward continuing to serve the community" following the re-instatement of a top rating.

As reported, The Nelson Tavern in Mudeford had received a one rating in November last year following a visit by BCP Council.

However, a follow up visit last month saw officers give the establishment a five rating – the top score available.

The pub said the business's owners were not in the country at the time of the November visit and this led to "incorrect information" being given to officers.

A spokeswoman for The Nelson Tavern said: “We were incredibly surprised and perplexed about the negative report we received at the end of 2019 despite the 5 rating we held.

"Unfortunately when the inspection took place on November 28 the business owners were not in the country which resulted in incorrect information being given to the council officers, that subsequently appeared in the report and the article.

"Following this, the Nelson challenged the points made in the report and received a second visit in January 2020 which re-confirmed our 5 rating that we have always prided ourselves on.

"The pub has always maintained high standards for its customers and we look forward to continuing to serve the community this way.”

Issues raised in the November inspection included that the practice of cooking handmade burgers to 58c posed an "unacceptable risk".

Out of date bread pudding was also found in the refrigerator and the salad bar was reported as running at 11.6c.

A spokesperson from BCP Council said: "We can confirm that an environmental health council officer inspected the Nelson on November 28 2019.

"At this time, there were a number of food hygiene contraventions.

"A further follow-up inspection was carried out on January 20 and it was noted that all matters identified had been effectively addressed and actioned which resulted in the business receiving the top rating of five on the Food Standards Agency's food hygiene rating scheme."
