The long running annual Largs Horticultural Show has been cancelled due to the Covid19 pandemic and will return in 2021 - the 180th anniversary of the very first show.

Popular with green fingered enthusiasts, and traditionally held in late August, it is the first time since the Second World War that the spectacle hasn't gone ahead.

Ian Taylor, President of Largs & District Horticultural Society, said: "One impact of the lockdown has been the extra time people have been able to spend in their gardens.

"This year, more than ever before, the care and attention lavished by experienced gardeners and the thousands who are trying to grow for the first has resulted in the best displays of plants and flowers and many people are having their first taste of home grown vegetables.

"It is ironic then, that the decision has been taken to cancel this year’s Largs Flower Show. With only a break for two World Wars and their immediate aftermath the show, has been held every year since 1841."

However, the horticulturalists are now moving to an online platform in order for gardeners to show off their beautiful gardens for everyone to see.

There is now a facebook page, Largs Horticultural Society, where members can post photographs give tips and hints or ask questions about any problems they may have.

Ian added: "The committee will be reviewing the situation regarding Covid-19 and plan that the normal activities of the Society, including the 2021 Flower Show, will be resumed."
