Fears have been raised that patients in ambulances could be buffeted about due to the 'appalling' state of roads leading to the Lady Margaret Hospital in Millport.

Kenny Sutherland, 61, took a video of the cracked up streets on his personal journey on his motorbike to illustrate the problem, and shared it with islanders who were disgusted at the state of the road.

The local chef, who is a strong supporter of the NHS, told the News that the two roads primarily affected were main routes leading to the island's hospital - College Street and Kames Street - and he feared that the last thing distressed patients in an ambulance would want is having to go over the bumpy stretch of road.

The matter of the derelict roads on the island was raised at last week's Cumbrae Community Council meeting on Zoom.

Kenny, who lives in Cumbrae Drive, said: "If a ambulance has to take a critical injured person to hospital this is what they have to drive over - it's a disgrace.

"If a child fell of a bike in Millport and had a head injury would you want them to be bounced up that road in an ambulance?

"I just wanted to raise the issue of the roads to the hospital for the ambulance service if there was a issue with someone injured with a back or head problem - it would be not nice to have to be taken up and down those roads."

Independent councillor Ian Murdoch has taken the matter up with North Ayrshire Council on Kenny's behalf.

He said: "The state of the roads in Millport are a concern in general - I have written to North Ayrshire roads to highlight the dangerous state of these roads. "The current position is that there are potholes needing repaired and general surface problems in specific areas.

"I know certain roads were quite bad before lockdown and I am in the process of cataloguing them not just on the Isle of Cumbrae but through the constituency area of the North Coast ward including Largs, Fairlie, Millport and Skelmorlie.

"It is not a great situation and I hope the matter can be resolved as quickly as possible."
