THIS year’s Millport Classic Car event will take place in the grounds of Garrison House on September 12.

The highly-anticipated event was due to be held earlier in the year, however fell foul of the coronavirus lockdown.

Organisers still hope to have something for all the family to enjoy, although admit that activities will be scaled down a little.

Lynne Bogan, one of the people behind the event, says there will be fewer cars than normal but it is still something for residents to look forward to.

She said: “Because we changed the date, the show will be reduced but I’m very hopeful it will go ahead.

“It’s a positive for the island after most of the events this year were cancelled. It’s finally something for residents to look forward to.

“If you think about families right now looking forward to the chance to go out, I would expect it to attract quite a bit of attention from far and wide, if the weather is good.

“I guess most people will be doing the whole staycation and looking for a safe day out to enjoy, which I think Millport will be able to offer.”

Organisers say social distancing can be maintained at the event, with cars spaced out and sanitising stations provided.

The show usually brings around 100 classic cars of all ages to the island and Lynne says it is a huge positive for Cumbrae.

She said: “It’s there in these idyllic surroundings, having these cars there is a really nice bonus for people and there’s a lot of family activities as well.

“It’s quite an ageing population on Millport and the classic cars are a lovely thing to see for the older people. They love talking to the owners and sharing stories.

“It appeals to them more than the other festivals that the island has - and it’s helpful for the business owners too in terms of trade.”

The show is now in its seventh year and will see iconic cars including a 1973 Jaguar E-Type and a 1969 Volkswagen beetle on display.
