A KEEN Millport cyclist says Captain Sir Tom Moore is his inspiration to circle the Isle of Cumbrae 71 times before his 71st birthday.

Former school teacher William Bishop, 70, is whizzing around the island for the special challenge after being driven on by the fundraising efforts of the Forces veteran who did 100 laps of his garden to raise cash for the NHS.

Proud niece Lorna Lagerman says her uncle has 'a heart of gold' and told the News everyone is behind his effort.

She said: "My amazing uncle is currently isolating on Cumbrae and to keep himself fit and active, challenged himself to do this.

"I know lockdown has been really difficult for many people and I just thought this was a really inspiring story. He can be seen most days making his way around the island.

"He is a truly incredible and unique person with the biggest, kindest heart. He is such an inspiration.

"Eight years ago, my dad passed away and when my daughter was born the following year, I asked my uncle if he would play a guiding role in her life - and he has more than stepped up to that challenge too.

"He's always off on adventures in his campervan and cycling and always sends her postcards and updates.

"His challenge is a big inspiration to us all."

William, who is also a former postman, said: "I was inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore. I just thought why don't I try and do something similar to help keep fit during lockdown.

"Captain Tom is such an inspirational character having raised £30m that he wasn't expecting. It's not quite on the same level, but I will personally donate £71 to the SSPCA on completing my challenge

"I had been coming to Millport for over 50 years and decided to buy a house here around eight years ago. I just love it the place.

"It has actually given me an enthusiasm for cycling again."

William, who lives in West Bay Road, added that Mapes of Millport have helped him source a high quality Cromford electronic bike for his mission.

He said: "Using the technology takes the stress out of my legs and I have just got the movement to worry about. It has been a tremendous help to me. Just one charge lasts me for around three laps.

"I have now reached three quarters of my target and will push on to complete it.

"Normally the island is crowded with people but I am lucky if I see as many as ten people when I am out during my daily route."

William loves to travel around Scotland in his camper van though is having to make do with Millport this year due to the lockdown situation - but told the News that there was nowhere else he would rather be

He added: "Before moving, I always made an effort to get to Millport every year as I just love the scenery and the people. Everyone has very supportive when they hear what I'm doing and some have even offered me money too for a charity of my choice."
