Cal Mac have had to suspend day trips from Largs to Cumbrae.

A statement issued in the last half hour from the ferry operator said: "Unfortunately, with immediate effect, we have had to suspend day trips from Largs to Cumbrae due to the extreme volume of passengers and vehicles presenting at this route today.

"As capacity is constrained, please consider your travel so capacity is available for key workers and island residents."

Earlier on today, the ferry company stated: "The sale of passenger tickets has been paused due to insufficient marshalling area on pier not permitting 1 metre social distancing."

Even before 11am, a long queue of traffic was building up for the Cal Mac ferry to Cumbrae.

This picture shows that it is going to be another busy day on the island with heavy traffic and pedestrian footfall expected. The queue to the ferry terminal is now going as far as Charles Street.

Cal Mac issued the following statement at 11.31am: "Due to volume of traffic, there is a approx three hour queue for cars and a approx one hour for passengers at Largs.

"We are operating a reduced timetable with limited capacity, therefore please consider your travel so capacity is available for key workers and island residents."

The current BBC forecast for this afternoon is sunny intervals and 21C temperature on the island which has reported busy numbers during sunny days in recent weeks, with long queues to get on the ferry becoming familiar scenes.
