Torrential rain resulted in flooding affecting Largs, Fairlie, Skelmorlie and West Kilbride.

The total rainfall over a three day period at Hunterston up until Wednesday at 2pm was 56.2mm with the majority of that falling last Tuesday when a number or roads were deluged.

The A78 from West Kilbride to Hunterston affected as larger vehicles were permitted to pass the flooding with care, while smaller vehicles were diverted via Kilrusken Toll.

As well as a local road closure at Skelmorlie, there was heavy disruption to the train service from Largs to Glasgow, with trains cancelled, while areas such as Fairlie Petrol Station, the A78 near the marina entrance and Hunterston were all affected.

The council also sent out support staff to help with flooding at Greeto Falls Avenue where the under road culvert was blocked.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We attended the site yesterday to assist and took immediate action – including unblocking the culvert, opening a manhole and using sandbags – to ease the flooding.

“We are investigating the cause and what further action will be required."

Locals also reported that the Gogo Burn was at full spate and as high as it had even been seen in recent memory.
