The September Weekend in Millport which traditionally heralds the end of the tourism season will not be going ahead this year due to Covid19 restrictions

Activities such as sandcastle competitions, crabbing, fancy dress and young talent events take place during the day.

In the evening there is usually illuminated houses, themed windows in shops, street theatre and a superb firework display.

The next event will take place in September 2021.

The organisers issued the following statement: "It is with a heavy heart that the tourist association have been forced to cancel the Covid limited September Weekend celebration. The police have advised that no public gatherings will be allowed until at least January.

"The Isle of Cumbrae Tourism Association are very disappointed as they had hoped to have the firework display and shop window decorations to cheer everyone up after a horrendous year.

"The Tourism Association hope to incorporate all events at a 2021 Easter gathering, welcoming everyone back to Cumbrae, providing that legislation allows."

The much loved local event is very much family orientated and a throwback to simpler times and encourages outdoor fun activities.

The event has been running since the 1930s on the island with shops and houses traditionally using padella lights to illuminate the town, while businesses such as The Newton Bar and The Ritz Cafe have various themes each year from Ghostbusters to Star Wars dance routines to entertain the crowds in front of their premises.
