LARGS Events chairman Ian Murdoch has vowed to carry on the popular Saturday market - after revealing some people wanted it 'shut down'.

The market based at Gallowgate Square has been a big draw and attracts around 15-20 stalls every Saturday in Gallowgate Square from 10am-4pm.

Ian said that 'certain individuals want the market closed'.

He said: "There have been certain people who have pushed to have the market shut down as a result of coronavirus concerns and other topics.

"The attraction was started to help local businesses, and they always get first refusal on the stalls.

"It has been very popular with Patons the butchers, Haylie Stores and West Coast Cakes all taking up stances. The Wee Deli in West Kilbride sells out every week too so has benefitted.

"If we can't get a local trader, the pitch is offered elsewhere. We have a baker from outwith the area for example as we couldn't get a local one involved."

Seafood has been a popular request from market-goers and Ian says he is working to try and get fishmongers involved.

He said: "We have Largs businesses first, then North Ayrshire businesses next.

"At present it fulfils all the guidelines for organised outdoor events - the minute that changes we would shut it down."

Organisers are looking at having Christmas-themed markets to make up for the lack of a Yuletide event. They are also looking at hosting a market in the Tron Place area of town during the winter months as it is more sheltered.
